[NCOG] Orchard Planning Seminar

Postby MarkEvens » Thu Feb 04, 2016 9:27 am

Date: February 20th. Location: Acorn Bank.
This workshop is for members of the public and NCOG members who are planning to plant top fruit (mostly, but not exclusively apples). Your proposed “orchard” could be anything from 4 or 5 garden trees to a hundred or more in a separately managed orchard.
The benefits of attending the seminar should be reduced risk of failure through disease, damage or physiological problems and better quality and quantity of fruit. You will also be introduced to grafting, which can significantly reduce the cost of the trees.
Particular attention will be directed at the issues facing growers in the Cumbrian terrain and climate.
The course is divided into a number of small modules and will include a number of practical sessions.
Topics include: Siting, Preparation, Soil testing (bring your soil), Tree sizing and spacing, Varieties, Guided tour of Acorn Bank, Grafting demonstration, Preparing a plan, Planting and care of young plants.
There will be ample opportunities to discuss specific issues with local experts.
The cost is £25 for non-members and £12 for members. This includes tea, coffee and lunch.
