Duke of Devonshire
Raised in 1835 by Mr. Wilson, gardener to the Duke of Devonshire at Holker Hall. Introduced in about 1875 and was a popular apple in Edwardian times. Late dessert, pick October, will keep up to March, flavour improves in store. Good cropper. Trees are moderately vigorous, spreading and resistant to scab. Fruit dull green with light russet, turning yellow as they ripen. Flesh firm, fine-textured, creamy white, juicy with a rich, sweet-sharp fruit drop nutty flavour. Bunyard called it “quite indispensable for late use”.
