Charles Ross is another English Victorian apple, the probable offspring of the aromatic Cox's Orange Pippin and the much older Peasgood Nonsuch. It takes its name from the head gardener of Welford Park, Newbury, Berkshire, who first cultivated it. Like the Orange Pippin, it has a taste that is slightly reminiscent of pear, although on first picking its flavour can be rather sharper and more acidic. These apples tend to be one of the largest varieties, rounded, with the red orange streaks of its parent Cox, but the flesh is lighter and can tend to be powdery as they mature.
