Apples
Hargreaves Greensweet

EATING

This is a very localised apple variety in that few outside the county of Lancashire are really familiar with it. It is old and was first identified as 'a tree of great age' when standing in the nursery of Messrs Hargreave during the 1840s. It is thought to date perhaps from the early eighteenth century. The fruit has very little noticeabe acidity but does have noteably soft, yellowish flesh and an exceptionally sweet taste. The fruit itself looks yellow with very occasional streaks of red and green, with colour variations occurring most noteably where it faces the sun. It is medium sized and cylindrical with a ridged crown.
