Longstart

COOKING

EATING

Originated in Westmorland, first recorded as “Long Starts” in grafting records from 1781 in the Lyth Valley, then again in 1815 when four were planted on the common at Grange-over-Sands. Was a favourite cottagers’ apple around Lancaster and in Westmorland in 19th C. It is said by Mr D. Holmes of the Lyth valley to have been grown in every orchard in his district in the past. Its name probably comes from its unusually long stalk. Reliable and healthy mid season dual purpose apple. Pick from September for use in Sept/Oct. Trees are weakly vigorous, spreading. Flesh is soft white, savoury, brisk and juicy with subacid flavour.
