Jupiter is a rather modern apple variety, having been developed in the 1960s by the East Malling Research Station in Kent. The objective was always to combine the notoriously difficult to grow Cox apple with a more versatile variety of the Delicious. Its other parent, the Starking, dates back to the Victorian era and was widely grown in the climate of North America. Jupiter is thus able to retain the attractive, red orange flushed, yellow skinned appearance of the Cox whilst being rather more robust. Jupiter has exceptionally juicy off-white flesh and is dense, somewhere between crunchy and soft, with a sharp yet rather complex flavour.
