EATING
Though to have originated in France and first imported to England in late 17th C. Grown from 18th C in the Crosthwaite area. “Margells” were recorded as being planted at Grange-over-Sands in 1812. A popular late dessert in Victorian time, pick October for use through December. Trees are weakly vigorous, heavy cropper and hardy but prone to canker. Fruit is small to medium size with orange/red flush and stripes over gold with some russet. Flesh is cream, firm, rather dry with a rich aromatic flavour but does require sunlight for full flavour development.
