Apples
Monarch

COOKING

Introduced in an Essex nursery shortly after the First World War, this large apple is the offspring of Peasegood Nonsuch and Dumelow's Seedling. Monarch makes a somewhat less sharp and juicier alternative to Bramley's Seedling although it bruises easily and does not hold its shape when cooked or baked. This apple has white coarse-grained flesh, is large, rounded and slightly conical and tends to the warmer colour pallette; namely yellowish skin with a reddish pink flush and broken stripes. It is often described as aromatic and in its cropping habit can be somewhat biannual.
