Winston was formerly known as Winter King, and would be used as a dessert apple initially; later in its shelf life for pressing. This apple was developed by William Pope at Welford Park Estate; he was a well-known Berkshire nurseryman. The apple first occurred in the early 1920s and its name was selected owing to its ability to keep well into winter. However, it was renamed during the Second World War to honour prime minister Winston Churchill. In appearance, Winston is medium sized with a greenish yellow base skin colour, a reddish flush and purple stripes. It has creamy white and firm flesh and is aromatic and rather tending towards a sharper flavour when first picked.
