This is an opportunity not just to learn how to use a scythe to mow long and difficult meadow flowers and grass, but also for a few people to try their hand at bud grafting, orb otherwise just to enjoy the late summer in fine company.

Our scythes are of the "Austrian" variety - very light, sharp and easy to use. They are by far the best way of cutting long grass (much better, quieter and cheaper than a strimmer). We will introduce you to the tool, its use and care, followed by some supervised practice. Experts are also welcome! NCOG has a selection of scythes but if you have your own, please bring it. As well as showing you how to use a scythe, we will also cover sharpening and 'peening'.

Bud grafting will be a available on a first-come first served basis (so booking is absolutely essential) using the few left-over rootstocks that we have from the late winter grafting event and buds from trees in my orchard (over 40 different varieties to choose from).

However, scything and budding are not compulsory, so members can just come along and watch the others work while enjoying the traditional NCOG tea/food/juice/cider/banter.

The event is planned to start at 1pm and go on until 5pm, after which there will be a committee meeting which any member is welcome to attend.
You are welcome to arrive earlier and bring sandwiches for lunch. We plan to provide some soup and bread. As ever, cake is welcome.

For those unfamiliar with the orchard, there will be a short tour, or you can just wander round (but steer clear of the scythers!).

This event is bookable. That means, as well as being able to notify you of any changes, we can plan food and car parking.

If the weather looks like being too poor, we may need to postpone. If you don't book, you won't know about any such change.

The grounds and garden of the historic house at Hutton-in-the-Forest will make the ideal backdrop of this apple-themed day. NCOG will have a stall there to provide advice, juice apples, and sell trees, juice and cider. There will be a display of a wide range of apple varieties. We will also assist with apple identification - for each variety you will need to bring 3 fruits and some leaf if you wish to have it identified (please complete the attached form to bring with your apples).

Visitors wishing to have apples juiced should bring clean apples (hand picked and washed, not rotten) and a container for their juice (about 1 litre per 2kg of apples).

There will also be various activities to entertain you and the kids - crafts, stalls, music and games.

A fun day out for adults and kids alike.
We will be pressing for the public (and members). Please make sure that all apples are clean and do not have rot. You will need containers for the juice (at least 500ml per kg).

If you want apples to be identified, please bring in at least 3 of each variety and preferably some leaves too. We may need to take them away for identification - you will need to provide your details.

Among the other planned attractions are:

• Apple-themed bakes (including apple crumble)

• Apple games - apple printing, finger paint apple trees, apple toss into hoops, apple lucky dip

• School photo display over the years plus children's written stories and interview activity.

• Baked potatoes and Cheese - vegan cheese and butter will be available. From the Pavillion.

• Teas and coffee - From the Pavilion,

• Apple pulp to take away - On close of day to NCOG pressing activity/ by field gate.

Entry is free, but there will be will be a range of apple and apples related produce (including juice and cider) available plus food/refreshments to buy.
